About The Images On This Site
Made along the West Somerset coast , this collection of images encapsulates the ever changing atmosphere and beauty of the shore line.
Nothing seems to stir the soul quite like the sea, its sheer size and power are humbling. It can appear both ferocious and frenzied when in the grip of a storm or placid and calm when the winds subside, a place to relax, take stock and unwind.
It is this tranquil mood that inspired these images.
By working in the soft fading light of dusk I am able to keep the camera shutter open for several minutes at a time, capturing the the ebb and flow of the tide and the continual motion of the clouds.
For me this is a magical process. It not only relies on my imagination and creativity to compose an interesting image, it is also hugely dependant on chance. The constantly changing light as well as the movement of sea and sky layer themselves throughout the exposure. This produces smooth abstract patterns that have an almost ethereal, dream like quality.
These images present more than just a snap shot of a scene but rather a slice of time condensed into a single image.

About The Photographer
Born in West Somerset, John has spent much of his life studying the various aspects of art and design from illustration to graphic design, photography and computer modeling.
His interest in photography begin at a young age when his father introduced him to macro photography (a type of close-up photography). He soon began experimenting with different photographic techniques and styles.
From 1997-1999 he was an invited exhibitor of landscape photography with the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen. He also held a series of independent exhibitions at the National Trust's Dunster Castle.
In 2005 he graduated from the Arts Institute Bourmouth with a 1st Class Hons Degree in Model Making for Design and Media. This gave him the opportunity to work for some of the UK's most respected Product Model Making companies and gave him access to clients such as Nokia, Samsung, Semour Powell and Dyson.
Recently John moved back to West Somerset to be closer to his family and pursue his passion for photography.
This site showcases a selection of John's latest work taken along the West Somerset coastline. These evocative images are created by using very long exposures, often running into several minutes. This enables him to capture the ever changing mood of the sea.
